Happily, if you choose Bluetooth, you’re rewarded with a rock-solid and reliable connection that’s good for up to 30 meters.
Wired connections…
If you wire-in the speakers to your existing system, there’s a good choice of inputs, including 3.5mm and RCA connections. Even better, if you want to pump up the bass, there’s an input for a subwoofer.
Other than a power indicator and a volume knob, all the controls and connections are on the rear of the active speaker. Annoyingly, this is also the case for the power button. This makes it hard to access if you have them on your bookcase. A power button integrated into the volume knob would be preferable.
Design…
It will come as no surprise that these are handcrafted cabinets. It’s just a shame that they’re made from MDF, though you’d be hard-pressed to tell. Realistically, at this kind of price, MDF is perfectly acceptable, though we’d love to see what the guys and girls at Audioengine could do with a real chunk of wood.
Still, we have to hand it to Audioengine; they make beautiful looking and solid speakers. We love the smooth cornered and glossy bamboo finish. It’s a great combination of aesthetics and quality.
Sound…
The speakers have rear-facing bass ports that work hard to get down nice and low without any unwanted resonance. This is all via the high-quality Kevlar 5” woofers .
Unless you’re heavily into EDM or modern styles of music like hip hop, these will do the trick. Plus, even if you are, you’ve got that subwoofer port to play with.
Clear and detailed…
High-end frequencies are taken care of through the ¾” silk-dome tweeters. They are clear and detailed. Likewise, even when the volume is pushed, and they are reaching up high, they don’t sound shrill.
Pro
- High-quality cabinets.
- Quality cables are included.
- Good choice of wireless and wired connections.
- A subwoofer connection is available.
- Quality Kevlar woofers.
Contro
- The power switch is on the rear of the active speaker.

KEF Q350 Bookshelf Speakers (Pair, Black) – Best Passive Bookshelf Speakers Under $1000
These are passive speakers, so a receiver or amplifier will be needed to power them.
The KEF Q350 features an all-new design and all-new cabinets. They have 6.5” woofers that also act as housings for the tweeter. This two-way bass reflex speaker system has a combined power of 160 watts.
Room filling volume…
The nominal impedance is 8 Ohms, and the maximum decibel level is 110 dB. That’s plenty loud enough, even for a bigger room. The sensitivity is rated at 87 dB.
It should be noted that they don’t come with the stands that are displayed in the photos. What’s more, they also don’t come with speaker grilles. Not that you’d want them anyway.
Design…
They come in a choice of either black or white, and the shells are constructed from a single piece of material. The cabinets look clean and sleek. The driver has a turbine-looking surround that contrasts perfectly to give it a modern yet industrial feel.
The all-new design features a large bass port at the rear of each speaker. This helps to keep down any resonance and push the bass response much lower than might be expected for such compact speakers. Since the speaker is also positioned in the center, unwanted vibration and buzzing are suppressed to a minimum.
Sound…
The tweeter is housed in the center of the woofer to try to achieve a single-point sound source. This helps to improve audio details, a better soundscape, and better overall sound dispersal.
The cool thing is that the tweeter also has its own dampening to cut down distortion in the lower range. Another addition to further enhance the clarity and performance of these already great sounding speakers.
Crystal clear…
The result of all this new architecture is a set of smooth and clear sounding speakers across all frequencies and volumes.
Pro
- Low distortion levels at high volume.
- New bass ports.
- New tweeter dampening.
- High clarity.
- Striking looks.
Contro
- Require careful placement.
- Stands and grilles are not included.

SVS Ultra Bookshelf Speaker (Pair) – Piano Gloss Black – Best Premium Bookshelf Speakers Under $1000
The SVS Ultra Bookshelf Speakers weigh 20 lbs. They have a maximum power output of 150 watts and a huge frequency range between 44Hz to 32,000Hz . The impedance is 4 Ohms, and the sensitivity rating is 87 dB.
The use of materials throughout is first class. This includes the 6.5” glass fiber mid-bass driver and the 1” aluminum tweeter. Like much of the rest of the speakers, there’s very little to criticize here.
Design…
There’s no doubt that these are well made, well-thought-out, and assembled with precision and quality. These high gloss piano finished cabinets are well-insulated and feature two separate chambers. One for the tweeter and one for the bass driver. This effectively minimizes interaction between the two drivers and subsequently maximizes performance.
Additionally, they have a strongly tapered edge at the front. This enhances the looks but, more importantly, serves to reduce edge diffraction to optimize the soundstage.
Sound…
The in the main drivers combine with the solid cabinets to produce transparent, clear bass and mid frequencies that are faithful to the original material. For small speakers, there’s no doubt that they have a big sound. They reach down low without ever sounded muffled or distorted.
The aluminum tweeters are equally impressive. They are crisp, clean, and airy. Whether you’re listening to vocals or dialog, they have a natural and warm sound to it.
Smooth as silk…
Finally, the crossover between the driver and tweeter is beautifully balanced. It makes for super-smooth transitions between the two drivers and adds a level of phase coherency and imaging rarely present in speakers at this price-point. Easily one of the Best Bookshelf Speakers Under $1000 currently on the market.
Pro
- Aluminum tweeter.
- Glass fiber 6.5” driver.
- Separate enclosures for each driver.
- Tapered edge diffracting cabinets.
- Quality construction.
Contro
- Weight.
- Price.

Audioengine HD6 Wireless Speaker – Best Bluetooth Bookshelf Speakers Under $1000
Features and Specifications…
The Audioengine HD6 Wireless Speakers are Bluetooth speakers. They can produce 150 watts of power and have a frequency range between 50 Hz to 24,000 Hz. The sensitivity rating is 95 dB.
The Bluetooth has a respectable range of 30 meters and is equipped with 24-bit DAC. This allows the speakers to bypass any potentially poor-quality sound card installed in your phone, laptop, or tablet. The result is premium sound over an extended wireless distance.
That all sounds good, we’re sure you’ll agree.
Simple wired connections…
The speakers also come with traditional wired connections at the back of the active speaker. There are RCA outputs and a 3.5mm output. Good quality cables are included in the package.
A volume knob is the only control on the front of the active speaker. Unfortunately, the volume knob can only put the speaker on standby. The main power switch is on the rear of the speaker, which is a little awkward.
Design…
There’s no doubt that Audioengine knows how to make well-made and fine-looking Speakers. The Audioengine HD6 Wireless Speakers are certainly no exception. With or without the supplied grills, in black, white, or walnut, they look the business.
These are handcrafted and hand-finished cabinets. The finish is furniture grade, which literally shines through. They’re stylish at every angle. Even the bass port at the back of the speakers is thoughtfully designed for aesthetics as well as for their all-important functionality.
Sound…
The 5.5” Kevlar woofers are seated in aluminum baskets. These are paired with silk-dome tweeters together with voice calls. All this, combined with the well-insulated cabinets and a well-designed crossover, leads to great sound.
They produce a lot of power for a small pair of speakers. But it’s a power that never feels out of control. There’s no booming or wooliness at high volumes. Plus, the speakers can handle low bass frequencies in their stride. Higher frequencies are detailed but don’t come across as overly sharp and have a pleasant gentle smoothness to them.
Pro
- Quality cabinets.
- Furniture grade finish.
- 24-bit DAC Bluetooth.
- 150 watts of power.
- Good bass response at lower frequencies.
Contro
- Difficult to access the power switch.
- No way to switch Bluetooth off and prevent its hijack.

KEF Q150B Q150 Bookshelf Speakers (Pair, Black) – Most Durable Bookshelf Speakers Under $1000
Producing 200 watts of power from speakers with woofers that measure just 5.25” is no easy feat. However, KEF has done exactly that and has done so in a great-sounding and impressive little package.
Like the KEF Q350 speakers we reviewed earlier, the Q150 uses a two-way bass reflex system. It also has the tweeter centrally mounted in the woofer to provide optimal sound. This set-up also creates its distinctive and powerful looks.
The frequency response is between 51 Hz to 28,000 Hz. The impedance is 8 ohms, and the sensitivity rating is 86dB.
Quite powerful…
If you want to annoy the neighbors and use all the 200 watts of power, you can get these little speakers up to 108 decibels. We just hope you don’t live in an apartment should you choose to turn things up to 11!
Controls are just about nil as these are passive speakers. There’s no Bluetooth, wireless, or anything else to think about. You get a couple of speaker-mounting posts at the back of the speakers, and that’s your lot. There are also no grilles or stands.
Design…
The KEF Q150s take their design cues from the entire KEF Q range. Consequently, you get all of the good stuff that’s found higher up in their floor-standing and significantly more expensive speakers. To start with, the cabinets are crafted from a single piece of material to give them a solid feel and reduce unnecessary vibration.
They come in a choice of black, white, or walnut, and they all look amazing. In no small part, this is also down to the cool looking turbine shaped of the main driver at the heart of the speakers.
Sound…
For a small 5.25” driver, it performs admirably to get down to the lower frequencies. It’s helped by the newly designed bass ports that keep down the resonance and help to reduce distortion.
Although they can’t compete for clarity with bigger speakers, they still punch well above their weight. If music with heavy bass is not a regular part of your listening, the KEF Q150 speakers should prove to be more than adequate.
Clear and crisp…
Not unexpectedly, the higher frequencies represent less of a challenge. Here again, the performance is convincing. Trebles sound crisp and clear.
Additionally, there is a distinct lack of distortion at the point the tweeter passes on its duties to the larger driver. This is achieved thanks to the inclusion of the tweeter’s own dampening system.
Pro
- Cabinets are crafted from a single piece of material.
- Good vibration suppression.
- Quality all-new bass ports.
- High clarity.
- Stunning looks.
Contro
- No grills are included.

Q Acoustics 3020i Bookshelf Speaker Pair (English Walnut) – Best Value for the Money Bookshelf Speakers Under $1000
In some ways, we’re possibly being a little unfair to the Q Acoustics 3020i Bookshelf Speakers. The fact is that these are an inexpensive set of speakers competing with alternatives that are two times the price and, in some cases, more.
Despite their size and cost, we think that their inclusion is more than justified. They might not have the same finesse as some of the other best bookshelf speakers under $1000 in our review, but they undoubtedly have a strong story to tell.
Let’s find out why…
The Q Acoustics 3020i Bookshelf Speaker Pair is the latest updated model that is 25% bigger with more power and range. They have a total of 125 watts maximum power rating with a frequency response range between 64Hz to 34,000Hz and a sensitivity of 88 dB.
Lower frequencies are taken care of by a 5” and higher frequencies with a ¾” tweeter.
Design…
For such an affordable pair of speakers, they’ve done a great job on the cabinets. The new beefed-up internal structure and bracing help to improve the soundscape and also decrease unwanted vibration, which is all good. However, these are still relatively small speakers that look like they could be just as comfortable on a desktop rather than in a bookcase.
The finish is great for the price, although we think the walnut speakers look the least appealing. We’d advise you to take a closer look at the black or white ones. The fronts of the speakers have stylish and sleek aluminum surrounds. They come with grilles included, but it would be a shame to use them.
Sound…
The increased size and the new ported vents help to create a deeper bass. They don’t get down as low as the KEF Q350s or give the same kind of clarity. But they still sound punchy and are more than capable of the kinds of volumes you’re likely to need in a small or medium-sized room.
The tweeter is decoupled from the main driver. This reduces the chance of interference and helps to improve clarity. It also helps to produce a wider and more evenly dispersed sound.
Pro
- Outstanding value.
- New internal structure and bracing.
- Quality bass ports.
- Decoupled tweeter.
- Stylish cabinet fronts.
Contro
- The bass response may be too thin for some.

Klipsch RP-600M Reference Premiere Bookshelf Speakers – Pair (Ebony) – Most Stylish Bookshelf Speakers Under $1000
Love them or hate them; there can be little doubt that these are a cool-looking and iconic set of speakers. They have 300 watts of peak power with a sensitivity rating of 96 dB and impedance at 8 Ohms. The main driver measures 6.5” and the tweeter measure 1”. This is coupled with their distinctive and trademark
Hybrid Tractrix Horn .
The rear of the speaker features a newly designed bass port and two speaker mounting posts. Since these are passive speakers, there’s nothing else, and you will, of course, need a receiver to power them.
Design…
There’s no doubt that these the Klipsch RP-600M speakers are the best-looking in their class. The horn-shaped Tractrix Horns and the copper-spun drivers look incredible. It’s the art of design at its finest, and it’s something you will instantly recognize across the entire Klipsch range.
Speaker grilles are provided, but we have no idea why you would ever want to use them.
On the inside, the speakers are well insulated to prevent sound leakage and vibration. On the outside, they are well-crafted and can compete with the best-made speakers in their class.
Sound…
The good news is that the Klipsch RP-600M Reference Premiere Bookshelf Speakers are about much more than looks. These are fine-sounding speakers that push out enough volume for even larger rooms. For any of you that want to crank up the volume, these have the power.
The main differentiating feature of Klipsch speakers over the majority of their competitors is the adoption of horn-shaped enclosures for the tweeters. Horn-style speakers are excellent at projecting sound but can struggle to create high-fidelity sound.
Happily, Klipsch has succeeded in this challenge and have utilized special facing and all new venting to produce a great sounding higher range. The highs sound smooth and clear without being shrill or unduly resonating.
So, what about the bass?
The copper spun drivers produce excellent conductivity that results in detailed and clear sound. Coupled with the non-resonating steel basket and insulated cabinets, there’s also little distortion to worry about.
Most listeners will have all the bass they’re ever likely to need. One reason why these are one of the Best Bookshelf Speakers Under $1000 you can buy.
Pro
- Strong build quality.
- Powerful.
- Low levels of distortion.
- Good bass response.
- They look amazing.
Contro
- Need careful room placement.
9
Edifier R2000DB Powered Bluetooth Bookshelf Speakers – Best Budget Bookshelf Speakers Under $1000
It would be unfair not to start by highlighting the fact that these are, by far, the least expensive bookshelf speakers in our review. They firmly belong in the same category as the affordable Q Acoustics 3020i Bookshelf Speakers we reviewed earlier.
The Edifier R2000DB are Bluetooth Bookshelf speakers. They have 60 watts of RMS power per speaker and have a frequency response of 55Hz to 20,000Hz. The sensitivity rating is 85 dB.
Good connections…
Bluetooth works well, and it’s quick and easy to hook up your electronic devices. The signal is good for up to 30 meters, and it’s thankfully strong and reliable too.
You also get plenty of wired connections. These include two RCA inputs, one optical and one coaxial input. Additionally, there are bass, treble, and volume controls plus two extra auxiliary inputs.
Design…
Like all cabinets at this price, they’re made from MDF. And like most cabinets at this price, despite the lack of real wood, they’re well put together and have a beautiful veneered finish. Also, like the majority of speakers made these days, they are manufactured in China.
They come with easily detachable grilles. It’s great to have the option, and though we wouldn’t normally use them, we’d make an exception for the Edifier R2000DB. Frankly, these are not very attractive speakers when the drivers are exposed. Best to cover them up!
Sound…
Fortunately, they sound much better than they look. Despite having a 5” woofer, they can still put out an impressively tight and well-balanced low end. You won’t get the same kind of fullness and depth as speakers with a 6.5” driver, but they still do a great job.
The mids and lower-mids have very little coloration and come across as nicely defined. The human voice, spoken or otherwise, and instruments have plenty of clarity. At the higher end, the 1” tweeter sparkles to deliver crisp, clean highs. What’s more, they continue to perform well at lower volumes.
Also a good option for home studios…
Though not completely un-colored, the profile is flat enough for them to be used as reference speakers in a small studio.
Pro
- Good selection of connections.
- Tight bass.
- Well balanced sound.
- Good build quality.
- Great value.
Contro
- Not attractive with the grilles off.
- The LED power light can be distracting.
10
Klipsch R-51PM Powered Bluetooth Speaker – Most Powerful Low-end Bookshelf Speakers Under $1000
Features and Specifications
These are 120 watts active Bluetooth speakers that use 24-bit DAC processing to bypass the sound card on your mobile, tablet, or laptop. What this means for you is better quality sound when hooked up to your external electronic devices. The latest version of Bluetooth also ensures a stable connection that runs up to 100 feet.
For those of you that want to use wired connections, there are RCA inputs, a 3.5mm auxiliary and optical input, and well as USB. If all of that’s not enough, it also has a connection for a subwoofer.
The Klipsch R-51PM comes with remote control.
Design
The speakers have the same great build quality and design cues found throughout the Klipsch speaker range. The cool thing is that this includes the incredible copper spun drivers and the unmistakable Tractrix Horn that sits above the main woofer.
We’re sure you will agree that the combination of sleek cabinets, control-free facing panels, and beautiful drivers make these one of the best-looking pair of speakers on the market. They are more like a piece of furniture than a piece of hi-fi add on.
Sound
The speakers can deliver a powerful, punchy bass thanks to the injection-molded graphite woofers . They are both light and rigid, so they can reach much lower frequencies than many drivers of the same size. If the bass is not enough, you still have the option of adding a subwoofer.
The high-quality aluminum tweeters paired with the Tractrix Horn technology creates detailed highs with little distortion. Reverberation is kept to a minimum, and they continue to be able to perform at extremes of volume.
Pro
- 24-Bit DAC Bluetooth.
- Subwoofer connection.
- Tractrix Horn Technology.
- Good build quality.
- Low, punchy bass.
Contro
- Need careful positioning.
